The front entrance of Dongdaemun Design Plaza.

I visited Dongdaemun Design Plaza by chance. One day, I decided to hop into a museum session because the architecture drew me in. It was noticeable from afar, and it looked like a recreational place with a disc shape. It was more than that after I wandered around in the cultural complex.

There were two parts: the big disc and an attachment. I went to the M3 gallery, which was close to the entrance. It was a large exhibition with multiple display platforms. The exhibition was called “Be Art”, which emphasised how clothing is wearable art. On each display platform, there was a digital portal that guided you through trying on clothes in different styles. It was an interesting form of experiential marketing. The interactive art session allowed me to play around with different fashion styles and materials without the hassle. The artists had a showroom in the same complex where you could get their designs.

The attached complex is quite a surprise. It was a very spacious café that, by eyeballing, could accommodate more than 100 people. The seats were scattered around the café’s serving counter, with several glass containers and pop-up tables selling merchandise from local designers and artists. The centre was the café, offering a selected range of gourmet cakes and coffee.

The structure had special effects at night; it glowed in different colours and patterns. Many people took a walk here after their meals because of the lighting and the abundance of recreational space. You would reach an atrium with greenery after passing through benches and a piano. If you are lucky, someone might be playing the piano for you.

DDP was a special art gallery, mainly showcasing design pieces in different forms. Perhaps Dongdaemun is a traditional clothing market.
